Daniel Ojukwu, a journalist affiliated with the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), has been released from police custody.

He had been detained since May 1st following his alleged ‘abduction’ by police officers in Lagos.

GWG.ng gathered Ojukwu’s family and FIJ management were unaware of his whereabouts until 48 hours after he was declared missing.

He was subsequently transferred to the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) in Abuja under the supervision of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) led by the Inspector General of Police.

Later, he was moved to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID).

Initially, the police had imposed stringent bail conditions on FIJ’s lawyers and negotiators. However, following pressure from civil society organizations, who marched to the Force Headquarters on Thursday demanding his release, the police began to relent. As a result, he was eventually released on Friday.

Abimbola Ojenike, FIJ’s lawyer was quoted as saying that “Daniel Ojukwu’s case is one of the most egregious cases of human rights violation and misuse of the powers of the Police against journalists”.

GWG.ng reports that the abduction and detention of Danie Ojukwu follows the case against another journalist, Segun Olatunji who was similarly abducted over a contentious story albeit by the military.
