Lai Mohammed Money Abdulrazaq

Governor AbdulRahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State has opened up on how money issues contributed to the quarrel between him and Information minister Lai Mohammed.

According to him several donations made to his 2019 campaign through the minister were not acknowledged. It is a claim that has in the past been denied by government spokesman, Lai Mohammed.

However,  GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that this is the first time that the governor has given specifics.

Speaking in an interview with Thisday, the governor said:

“The Chief of Staff to the Kaduna State Governor called and said Lai gave us an account but it’s not going through, “can you give us another account so we can send you the money?” But I was going to campaign so I said fine.

“I came back two days later and remembered, and I said they should call him and give him an account number. When we called, he said Lai had sorted it out. That one and several. Until today, as we speak, he never told anybody that he collected money.

“There’s a businessman from the South-east. His banker came to me and said his Oga wants to speak with me. I spoke with him and he said he was sending money to me. I said, thank you very much. After the election, he called me to congratulate me.

“When he saw I was just saying ‘thank you’, then he asked if Lai didn’t deliver the money, I asked him what money? He said N100 million,” Governor AbdulRazaq said.

According to the governor, an unnamed Igbo businessman later called to congratulate him and also mentioned the donation, but he was unable to confirm receipt. According to Governor Abdulrazaq, Lai Mohammed failed to account for hundreds of millions donated to the campaign.

Governor AbdulRazaq also accused Lai Mohammed of working against his emergence as candidate of the APC as he alleged that the minister who was the undoubted leader of the party in the state at the time humiliated him. He, however, did not say how the minister humiliated him.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Lai Mohammed had in the past brushed aside the allegations noting how he as leader of the party worked on behalf of the candidate to ensure his victory.

“By the grace of God, I single-handedly, with the support of friends, politicians and families, raised all the money for all the elections we had in Kwara during that period, starting from the by-election that brought in honourable Raheem Olawuyi (Ajuloopin) as rep member,” Lai Mohammed said last July.

“I challenge anybody here to say who gave the party one penny apart from what I gave them. The money paid to party agents and leaders to mobilise voters was raised by me.I challenge anybody here to say that he gave logistic support to the party, I did it by the grace of God.

“I distributed 500 motorcycles, 20 vehicles and many of the beneficiaries are here,’’ Mr Mohammed said

The interview came against the background of the divisions in the APC which were manifested by separate congresses last weekend.
