Cannabis in Nigeria

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, recently raised alarm over the rate at which Nigerians, especially youths are consuming cannabis. Study has shown that the consumption of cannabis ranks just below alcohol as the second most used psychoactive substance in Nigeria. It is mostly used by people aged 25-39 years.

The following are four reasons why the consumption of illegal products is thriving in Nigeria.

Easy access

Though it is declared as an illegal substance having access to it is very easy in most cities and villages in Nigeria. It is a substance that can easily be planted around.

Attitude of security agents

Consumption of cannabis and other illicit drugs among young one would continue to rise as a result of police and other security agents’ connivance who are supposed to track down offenders. Many security men also use the illicit drug. Unless there is a change of heart, the fight against consumption of cannabis becomes a difficult battle to fight in Nigeria.

Misconception

Those who consume the substance believe that it gives them boldness to express themselves when it matters. In addition, some according to surveys, also believe that it makes them to write very well during examinations without realizing the harm it does to the body.
