keep children busy during holiday

Children of school age in Nigeria are on holiday for at least two weeks. Sometimes directing their activities within this period could be hectic. Here are some tips on how to keep children busy during the holiday.

Make them watch educational films

Your children can watch crash courses on YouTube, where they can learn a series of subjects such as physics, history, chemistry, astronomy and biology.

Go for a train ride

Although the railway system in Nigeria is not top-notch and not available in every part of the country, if you are lucky to catch a ride, bring out your kids and let them have fun.

Regulate sleeping and eating

The amount of sleep recommended for children varies with age. Toddlers typically sleep 11 to 14 hours in a 24-hour period; pre-schoolers 10 to 13 hours; school-age kids and preteens 9 to 12 hours per night; and teens 8 to 10 hours. Eating on a regular schedule also helps maintain energy and blood sugar levels.

Visit friends and family

A holiday period offers opportunity for children to visit members of the extended families and friends.  For them to have a change of environment, a visit to friends and members of extended family may offer an ideal option.

Visit museums

Though  arts culture is  perhaps  low in Nigeria, we can begin to create the interest  in the children by ensuring that during  the holiday we take them to  the museum.

Organise a treasure hunt

You can organise a treasure hunt around your home or garden (if you have) with clues for the children to find. And don’t forget to reward them with gifts when they find the treasure.

Learn a new language

Children have the ability to learn new skills and languages faster than adults. Find places around you where languages are taught or hire a language tutor for them. Within two weeks, you might be surprised they are able to construct a sentence in a new language.
