New Fears As APC Announces February 26 Convention Date
The national convention of the All Progressives Congress, APC is to hold on February 26, 2022, Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State and Chairman of the Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) announced on Tuesday.
However, the announcement has again been shadowed by fresh controversies over an alleged plan to amend the party’s constitution that could restrict the party to the use of only consensus in the selection of party candidates and officials.
Buni announced the convention date at the APC Progressive Women Conference in Abuja, on Tuesday.
The governor urgied the women to come out massively and contest in the forthcoming “national convention holding by 26th of February 2022.”
According to the party chairman the party now has an estimated 40 million members after the revalidation exercise that was concluded last year.
He said that the number of party members puts the party in a good position to win the 2023 General Election.
Meanwhile, the announcement by the APC of the February 26 date for the convention has been shadowed with fresh controversy over a plan to railroad an amendment that could bind the party to consensus in the selection of party candidates and officials.
Presently, the party has the option of using consensus, direct primary or indirect primary in the selection of party candidates.
Disclosing the fears of some in the party, a party stalwart told GreenWhiteGreen GWG:
“Yes we are hearing of an amendment that is going to be proposed at the convention but the fact of the matter is that the amendment has not been circulated.
“Nobody has confirmed it but we hear that it is to bind the party to the use of consensus as an option in choosing its candidates and officials.”
The source affirmed that the use of consensus would inevitably be a death blow to the aspirations of some aspirants who are not seen to be in the good books of the party establishment.
