You Ban Igbo Songs But Celebrate Mass In Latin, Catholic Priest Under Fire

The video of the moment that Rev. Fr. James Anelu, the Parish Priest of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Ewu-Owa Gberigbe in Ikorodu, Lagos, banned Igbo songs in his parish has come to the fore.

In a video posted on Linda Ikeji Blog, Fr Anelu was heard justifying his ban of the use of Igbo songs in his parish saying that he was stopped from presiding over a burial in Ekwulobia, Anambra State by the Catholic hierarchy in the area because he could not speak Igbo.

His assertion in the parish was, however, visibly opposed by parish members forcing the priest to assert that those opposing the ban were opposing God.

Reactions to the video shared on Linda Ikeji blog have been trending on Instagram.

You need to go the churches in the North, the way they sing in Igbo, you will think you are in Enugu?

kennyposhh

Whats is the use of a mass without igbo songs ??? You won’t understand. But choristers can sing in any languages but that igbo songs during mass sinks differently ???.

blandine_royalty, a Cameroonian reacting to the priest who banned Igbo songs, said:

This doesn’t make sense to me ohh. I’m from Cameroon, in my church there is Igbo choir and they sing in Igbo in Cameroon. Then they are banned in their own country. Tribalistic priest ??

sucrefashion_

You ban Igbo songs but you use latin to celebrate mass?? Heavenly language, Igbo language way God no day waste time to answer my prayers

Religion/tribalism is one of the reasons why this obodo 9ja is not moving forward

chisom_nwakor

Maybe his communion was mixed with alcohol ????

Then, the solution is not to ban Igbo songs. He should have advised the choir coordinator to incorporate songs from other tribes na! Life shouldn’t be this complicated. ?

real_ikeedward

But, he welcomes an Igbo offering and donation, mugu

duchessventures

Imagine threatening them with the wrath of God…..very good move by the Archbishop on the suspension. Rubb*ish ??

chik2414

There’s no Christ in him.

blaq_lyn

The priest has a bit of hatred for the Igbos, the envy is very clear.

santuschiba

Even in my village Catholic Church in Imo, the choir there sings Hausa song. That song that says “Mun zoya baban gidi mun zo” something like that ?????

yungkizali

So can you go to celestial church anywhere and not hear Yoruba songs ?

mrvalmikechuks

We even use yoruba and efik songs in the east.

mazichiko

The hatred for Igbos in Nigeria is so glaring by the day. Wetin Igbos do? Like, for real, what is the problem?

raymond_billy_93

Watin tribe don cause for this world too much na wa oo? Why the other tribe for the church no sing them song also because I Belive say na mix tribe Dey the choir ?

james_atumaa

And what he fails to understand is without Igbo in Catholic Church in Nigeria catholic old have been dead in Nigeria because at 85 percent off igbos r Catholic while just 15 percent off the yorubas r Catholic why 5% of the northerners r Catholic while 45 percent off South South r Catholics so you can not do without singing the majority dilate

mz.kalu, also responding to the priest charged that he would collect Igbo offering but ban songs from the ethnic tribe:

And you Dey collect Igbo people tithe and Offering okwaya???

michealsmith447

we have live the church for him let him carry him Benin and yoruba demons and start praising their God in their own language igbophobia will end if Nigeria get divided

uyaka4040

Uyaka already left the church, Fr James oya you can now go on with your other tribes bcos you forgot that Igbos are mainly Catholics.

di_moritz

Even Catholic church don join the drama???? What a shame this people are bringing on Christianity, I hope he will stop prayer warriors from speaking in tongues too ????

svpmiller9

Catholic church is mostly dominated with Igbos in any region in this country . It not about tribe but who and who is there worshipping?
