Obiano Released From EFCC Custody, Banned From Travelling Out
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Wednesday evening released the immediate past governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano on an administrative bail but with the proviso that he will remain in the country.
An official at the commission, who confirmed the development to Daily Trust disclosed that Obiano’s “passport was seized by the anti-graft agency as part of his bail conditions.”
The spokesman for the EFCC Wilson Uwujaren, could not be reached for comments as of the time of filing this report to get an official confirmation of the release of Obiano.
Obiano, was nabbed on Thursday at about 8:30pm by the anti-graft agency at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, hours after he left office and handed over to the new Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo.
He was reportedly on his way to the United States of America when he was apprehended.
He was subsequently transferred to the headquarters of the commission, where he was quizzed for days over alleged mismanagement of N5 billion Sure-P money, N37 billion security vote, withdrawn in cash, as well as some inflated contracts.
GreenWhiteGreen GWG had reported that Obiano inherited N75 billion in cash from his predecessor, Mr Peter Obi in 2014 and it was reported that he handed over N300 billion to his successor, Prof. Charles Soludo.
The release of Obiano came after he handed over last Thursday and was arrested at the airport by EFCC operatives while on his way to the United States.
