Alaafin Of Oyo: How Oyo State Lost Three First Class Monarchs In Five Months

The death of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III has left many Nigerian in shock as he becomes the third first class monarch in Oyo State to pass away within five months.

Recall that The Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Jimoh Oyewumi Ajagungbade III, in December 2021 joined his ancestors, at the age of 95 years after he reigned for 48 years and was immediately buried according to Islamic rites. His death according to the governor was a huge loss to the Ogbomoso Kingdom, Oyo and humanity in general.

Alaafin: Retired Boxer Who Reigned For 52 Years

Few weeks after The Soun’s demise, was the passing on of another great monarch, Oba Saliu Adetunji, who was the 41st Olubadan of Ibadan. Saliu was the Balogun of Ibadan land before his coronation as the Olubadan of Ibadan. He died at the age of 93 on 2 January 2022.

Now months after, Oyo State has been struck with the death of another top monarch just few months after the passing on of Oba Saliu Adetunji with the death of another first class monarch.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi was confirmed death early on Saturday. The Alaafin of Oyo is now the third top monarch in Oyo state to die within five months under the governorship  of Seyi Makinde. Oba Adeyemi died at the age of 83 becoming the longest ruling Alaafin on the throne having reigned for 52 years.

A social media user identified as @Ifemidayo has however taken to his handle suggesting that the demise of the three greatest monarch of Oyo state is a clean slate for the appointment of new kings with the death of three first class monarchs within five months.

However Governor Seyi Makinde is yet to make an official statement on the death of the Alaafin of Oyo, as Nigerians wonder why such ill omen would befall Oyo State.
