Three Factors Against Ahmad Lawan As APC Presidential Candidate

Lawan loses mother

Senator Ahmad Lawan who was on Monday afternoon announced as the consensus presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC has been an unlikely survivor in the political space.

A former lecturer, he along with Hon Nicholas Mutu are about the longest serving legislators in the National Assembly having served in the parliament from 1999 till date. However, his survival and even promotion in the political space defied expectations given his particular geopolitical deficiencies.

Why His Emergence is Surprising.

  1. Lacks Support of Governors

The announcement of Ahmad Lawan as the APC presidential candidate is a surprise as it came against expectations, especially after the Northern governors who control the delegates to the convention had impressed it on President Buhari to produce the next presidential candidate from the South.

Should the APC allow a free and fair voting in the presidential convention, Lawan would certainly not carry the votes as the only major person backing him presently is his governor, Alhaji Mala Buni.

2. From a Northern Minority

Lawan is Bade a small ethnic group in Northern Yobe whose people are found in two local government areas, Bade and Jakusko Local Government Areas of Yobe. It was not a shock few days ago that a prominent Kanuri politician from Borno State in dismissing Lawan aspiration put a shade as to his ethnic identity.

Given his ethnic identity, many Kanuri and Hausa-Fulani irredentists would be appalled that a Bade man with little presence in the national polity could be on the threshold of becoming president.

Indeed, the emergence of Ahmad Lawan as a senator in 2007 after eight years in the House of Representatives had more to do with his play-along politics with the Kanuri leaders of Yobe State than for any other political prowess.

3. Was A Tinubu Ally

When Ahmad Lawan entered the race few weeks ago, the general impression that was fanned was that he came in as a prop for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu with the claim that he was there to populate the crowd for Tinubu in the event that the presidential aspirations were asked to vote among themselves. However, over the days, his aspiration took a life of its own as Senator Orji Uzor Kalu who had earlier drummed support for himself and where not, an Igbo president from the Southeast became a prominent Lawan campaign advocate.

The possible emergence of Ahmad Lawan as the APC presidential candidate is undoubtedly something that is bound to be a surprise to many.
