Karim Benzema has had an unbelievable campaign in 2021/22, arguably the best of his professional career yet.

The Frenchman was the definitive figure in Real Madrid’s successful season helping them to clinch a 35th La Liga title and their 14th UEFA Champions League crown as well as Spanish Super Cup triumph. While he awaits an almost certain Ballon d’Or award for his impressive numbers, we take a look at five records Karim Benzema created that see him as the leading favourite for the award;

• Champions League and La Liga Top Scorer:

Karim Benzema won the La Liga Golden Boot for the first time in his career with 27 goals and his red-hot individual campaign also saw him crowned as the UEFA Champions League top scorer with 15 goals. The Frenchman became only the sixth player in history to achieve this feat alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Ferenc Puskas, Raul and Alfredo Di Stefano.

• Personal Best in Champions League and La Liga: With 27 goals in the Spanish league and 15 goals in the Champions League this campaign, Benzema has broken his personal records in both competitions. His previous best in La Liga was 24 goals in the 2015/16 season while his best ever tally in a single UEFA Champions League campaign was 7 goals.

• Most Goals For A French Player In A Single Champions League Edition: The last time a French player scored 10 goals in the competition was in 1958/59 by Just Fontaine and Karim Benzema destroyed the record this term with 15 goals, also bringing an end to a 63-year wait for a French player to reach double figures in the competition.

• Second Highest Goal scorer In Real Madrid History: Karim Benzema surpassed Los Blancos and Spain legend Raul to become Real Madrid’s second highest goal scorer with 323 goals. The Frenchman’s impressive goalscoring season has seen his name written into the folklore of the greatest ever football club as he is only behind Cristiano Ronaldo who had 450 goals for Real Madrid.

• Most Goals In Champions League Knockout Phases: The 34-year-old’s spectacular performance on the European scene reached the highest scoring level. Benzema scored three goals against Paris Saint Germain in the Round of 16, four goals against Chelsea in the quarterfinals and three goals in the semi final against Manchester City, and with 10 goals he his now the record holder alongside Cristiano Ronaldo who reached the same mark in the 2016/17 season.
