Delta APC Chiefs Ponder Options After Senator Nwaoboshi’s Jail Sentence

Chieftains of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Delta State were at the weekend recovering from the news of the jail sentence slammed on Senator Peter Nwaoboshi pondering the options available to the party after the disaster brought by the judgment.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Senator Nwaoboshi who presently represents Delta North Senatorial District was on Friday handed a seven year jail sentence for money laundering and related charges.

His conviction by the Court of Appeal came after a High Court in Lagos dismissed the charges brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. The EFCC had appealed the judgment leading to the reversal of the earlier judgment by the Court of Appeal.

Senator Nwaoboshi has meanwhile vowed to appeal the judgment to the Supreme Court.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Senator Nwaoboshi had been a key leg in the unfolding quest by the APC to upturn the 23-year dominance of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Delta State.

Remarkably, Nwaoboshi like the APC governorship candidate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege was an actor in the PDP and only defected to the APC a year ago. Following his defection, he had been positioned to lead the charge against the PDP in Delta North with the prospect of a stormy war in the senatorial base of the incumbent governor, Ifeanyi Okowa.

Politics in the state had been further energized after Okowa emerged as PDP vice-presidential candidate, a development that had raised the stakes with Nwaoboshi and his allies in the APC being put under pressure with the ascendancy of the governor.

However, the jail sentence handed Nwaoboshi according to multiple sources in the APC has now become a major setback.

Party sources were at the weekend divided on whether Nwaoboshi could be substituted or allowed to bid his time while he appeals the conviction.

“It is more than a disaster, it is finished for him,” a top APC stakeholder told GreenWhiteGreen GWG on Saturday.

Another official  of the party while speaking on Sunday agreed that it was a major set back. He was, however, hopeful that Senator Nwaoboshi would sort out the issues following the jail sentence and could be quick enough to stand for the election and contribute to the APC’s expected assault on the PDP next February.
