The Deputy President of Kenya, William Ruto has been declared winner of the country’s close-fought presidential election.

Some commissioners have, however, rejected the result of the just concluded election.

Chairman of the country’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, Wafula Chebukati made the declaration on Monday.

According to him, Ruto had won almost 7.18 million votes (50.49 percent) against 6.94 million (48.85 percent) for his rival Raila Odinga in the August 9 vote.

Announcing Mr Ruto as President-Elect, Wafula Chebukati, chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), said, “in accordance with the Constitution and the law, chairperson of IEBC hereby declare that Ruto William Samoei has been duly elected as the President of the Republic of Kenya under the provision of Article 138 of the Constitution of the Presidential election held on August 9, 2022.”

Mr Odinga enjoyed the support of the incumbent president, Uhuru Kenyatta.

The results have, however, been rejected by Mr Odinga while four of the seven members of the electoral commission also refused to authenticate the result.

“We cannot take ownership of the result that is going to be announced because of the opaque nature of this last phase of the general election,” the BBC quotes Juliana Cherera, the vice-chairperson of the IEBC, as saying.

“We are going to give a comprehensive statement… and again we urge Kenyans to keep calm. There is an open door that people can go to court and the rule of law will prevail,” she said.

Despite not enjoying Mr Kenyatta’s support during the elections, Mr Ruto said he would continue with the programmes of the government.

“I want to acknowledge Uhuru Kenyatta who has worked with me over the last 10 years. I want to commit to the people of Kenya that I will build on the foundation that Uhuru and I put together and take this country to the next level.”
