Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP presidential candidate on Friday met with high level officials of Joe Bidden administration in Washington DC winning a commitment of the US to support and keep an eye on the democratic process in the country.

GWG.NG gathered that Assistant Secretary, Bureau for African Affairs, the lady responsible for articulating the Biden administration’s policies for Africa led the US State Department to the interactive session.

Atiku led the delegation from the PDP campaign that also had Governor Aminu Tambuwal, House of Representatives Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu, Senator Bukola Sarami, former Governor Emeka Ihedioha, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi, media aides among others.

“The focus of our discussions were on the critical need to seek collaborative solutions to our local issues on democracy and governance, our deteriorating security and the economy,” a source embedded in the delegation told GWG.NG.

The Biden administration has not hidden its determination to watch the Nigerian government push through a transition that resonates with international best practices and that message it was gathered was passed through at the meeting.

Besides, the source added that the Atiku delegation won the support of the US administration to keep the democratic practitioners in toe. As the source added:

“Most importantly, we secured commitments to support for free and fair elections in Nigeria, an announcement of a sanction policy before the elections to deter anti-democratic forces and commitments for continued partnership with Nigeria in areas of security and development.”
