Nigerian Resident Doctors Issue Strike Notice

Published

on

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, has warned of impending nationwide strike action due to unresolved issues. According to NARD, unresolved issues are endangering industrial peace and harmony in the health sector.

In a statement issued by its President, Emeka Innocent Orji, NARD expressed gratitude to the government for its efforts in resolving some of the issues raised, but requested that attention be given to other outstanding issues.

NARD issued the warning in a statement addressed to Senate President Ahmad Lawan, House Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, and the Department of State Services, DSS.

An open letter to the president of the Confederation of African Health Workers (CAH) giving notice of the strike by the Nigerian doctors read thus:

“If these issues are not resolved before January, our members will likely give us a mandate to immediately kick-start processes that will lead to a nationwide industrial disharmony in the health sector,”

GWG.ng reports that the strike notice from the resident doctors is coming against the background of unresolved issues in several other sectors of the polity and notably in the education sector.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU had last year waged a war for nine months over the failure of the Federal Government to resolve lingering issues in the sector.
