Peoples Democratic Party Senatorial Candidate for Kwara South, Sen Rafiu Ibrahim, has rejected the result declared by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the senatorial district, saying it was fraught with electoral malpractices.

In a statement issued by Director of Media and Communications, Sen. Rafiu Ibrahim’s Campaign Team, Dr Babatunde Salami, on Tuesday, Ibrahim promised to challenge the result in court and reclaim what he described as a stolen mandate.

“The PDP candidate for Kwara South, Sen. Rafiu Adebayo Ibrahim, has rejected the outcome of the National Assembly elections declared by Independent National Electoral Commission.

“This is due to several reported cases of gross electoral malpractices and widespread electoral fraud by agents of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and officials of the electoral commission, as against the stipulated guidelines in the Electoral Act.

“These actions violate the fundamental principles guaranteeing free and fair elections, according to the electoral act. The candidate will be seeking redress at the court to reclaim his mandate” Salami said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Sen. Lola Ashiru of APC, who was declared winner, polled a total of 55,966 votes in the Feb. 25 election, while Ibrahim scored 34,950.

Prof. Wale Suleiman of Social Democratic Party (SDP) polled a total of 24,215 votes to place third in the keenly-contested election. However the election was relatively peaceful across the seven local government areas that make up the senatorial district.
