Okowa Baba-Ahmed election

The Vice-presidential candidates of the PDP and Labour Party, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and Yusuf Baba-Ahmed have taken a joint declaration against the continued declaration of results asking INEC chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu to explain his revision on the compulsory use of the BVAS machine to upload results.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Baba-Ahmed, Governor Okowa said expressed consternation why Yakubu after fighting for the use of BVAS reversed himself on the issue. He said that the country must if necessary borrow money to conduct a fresh poll according to the law because there is no cost to having a government trusted by the people.

“They are no longer neutral and impartial and under these conditions there is no moral justifications for the compilation of the results because it is expressly stated in section 64 (4) that if the polling unit results are not transmitted through that there is nothing to compare. So, you cannot raise the hopes of Nigerians.

“You cannot say let me continue and conclude then review, who is reviewing? He has the right to take the decision at this moment. You cannot go back do something glaringly wrong and …

“Yakubu should tell Nigerians why the results were not uploaded? Something is wrong inside INEC. They should tell us it is either that the system was wrong or there was connivance within INEC.”

“If he knows that he cannot keep to that which he asked for, he should honestly step aside, that is what we are asking for. He has to do the right thing.”

“If their portal was done and therefore could not uphold, and therefore they cannot compile results,  they know they have breached the constitution, the only honest thing to do is cancel the results and then call for another election day.

Saying that cost was not a consideration, Senator Okowa said that there is no cost to democracy. “Whatsoever is right is right. If this country has to source for money in order to go forth and give Nigerians a credible election so that we can give hope to our country that there is a future for this nation, we have to go on, even if it involves us borrowing money from any source.”

Baba-Ahmed on his part said that it was the character of this government to make promises which they had no inclination to uphold.
