Labour party’s Governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Patrick Rhodes-Vivour, has come under scrutiny over his Igbo roots with his campaign stirring fresh arguments among ethnic champions over the political lordship of Nigeria’s commercial capital.

Despite paternal links from a famous Lagos Island family, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour’s maternal and marital links to Ndigbo has come into play days ahead of the crucial Lagos State governorship election.

His mother and his wife are full-blooded Igbo, a development that has aroused concern among some Yoruba who have been accused of being Igbophobic.

Lagosians are torn whether this affilation truly matters in determining who will govern the state.

Recall that some previous governors of Lagos state have come from other western states asides Lagos.

While some argue this is a plan for the Igbo to invade Lagos, others believe, it does not really matter since it’s traditional to regard paternal roots as more important in defining the origin of a person.

The controversy has created arguments on social Media and with the hashtag #igbo# trending with over 75,000 tweets.

GWG.ng gathered some of the tweets arising from the Igbo roots of the Labour candidate, Rhodes-Vivour.

What did Igbos ever do to you? If I see you need emergency help somewhere that I’m in position to help, does it make sense to ask if you’re Yoruba or Hausa before I help? Please stop tribalism, we all want a better Lagos and a better Naija.

No Igbo man is interested in leading Lagos,we all desire good governance. Besides, it is Igbo. Which school did you attend?

Yorubas and Lagosians think that Igbos are flocking to Lagos,no we flock and migrate to even the deepest part of the north and west and south too,And even in northern African countries. Why? We are always seeking new grounds, new opportunities, new businesses. We  follow the money.

If u are a Yoruba person speak up n condemn this charade. Don’t come on Twitter to say later that Igbos are always claiming victim. An Igbo person is not contesting for Governor in Lagos State but some how, some of you have made it Igbo v who own the Land. We are not your stooge

Gracious Truth @ITABONO
Shut up!! You are a guest in Lagos too like the IGBOS and Nigerians from other states.
A true Yoruba man from LAGOS STATE WILL VOTE FOR A SON OF THE SOIL.
WE WILL NOT SUPPORT OPPRESSION OF LAGOSIANS. GO BACK TO YOUR STATE AND BRAGG THERE.
