13-Year-Old Boy Dies After Attempting TikTok Challenge

A teenager in Ohio, USA, died after taking too much Benadryl in response to a trending TikTok challenge. Jacob Stevens, a resident of Greenfield, attempted the “Benadryl Challenge,” a viral prank in which participants consume over a dozen pills of the antihistamine in an effort to cause hallucinations.

Jacob’s body started having seizures when he and his friends were filming the challenge at home, his parents informed the local news outlet ABC 6.

The teen was taken urgently to the hospital and placed on a ventilator; however, it was removed once there was no longer any sign of brain activity.

‘No brain scan, there was nothing there. He said we could keep him on the vent, he could lay there like that but he would never open his eyes, he will never breathe on his own,’ Jacob’s grandmother Dianna Stevens told the local station.

Jacob later passed away on April 12th, Wednesday. An obituary written last week states that his parents believe he will be remembered as a “well-mannered, funny, loving kid.”

The National Institutes of Health warns that taking more diphenhydramine than is advised might result in respiratory failure, an irregular heartbeat, cardiac arrest, convulsions, and even death.

After the challenge first gained popularity, Johnson & Johnson, the pharmaceutical firm that makes Benadryl, released a statement, calling it a “dangerous trend” that needs to be “stopped immediately.”

The business also stated that it was working with TikTok and other social media platforms to delete content that displayed this behavior.
