World Design Day: How Graphic Design Has Shaped World Beauty  

World Design Day takes place on April 27 every year. It marks how design can change the world. Design has far-reaching impacts on our daily lives — much more than we realize. It exists in beautiful things around us like décor, artwork, landscaping etc.

Design elevates the mundane, too. From flyers and roads to the chairs we sit on.  You must not fail to appreciate the high-tech sports gear you wear, or the pedestrian path that makes walking such a pleasure. That is the beauty of good design, it is meaningful, inspirational, and exists all around us.

On World Design Day, designers everywhere celebrate their profession. The day calls on designers to harness their talents to improve public well-being.   To channel their abilities to innovative solutions that meet the needs of their families, friends, and local environment.

The idea behind World Design Day came from Kim Paulsen, V.P. of the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (ico-D). The first edition was held on April 27, 1995, but it was named World Graphics Day then. The initiative recognizes how design makes everyday life both beautiful and meaningful.

The day celebrates all design aspects including aesthetics, form, and function. It also promotes several areas of design like visual communication, graphic design, awareness, promotion, management, and training worldwide.

You also need to know that Logo design dates back to the 13th century, when the Egyptians used images and symbols for expression. William Addison Dwiggins coined the term in his publication called New Kind of Printing Calls for New Design.

The printing of the U.S Declaration of Independence used the Carlson font. In 1282, the first watermarks were introduced in Fabriano, Italy and Johannes Gutenberg, a German inventor, invented movable, mechanical-type printing in Europe.
