ECOWAS rafsanjani

Awal Musa Rafsanjani, head of Transparency in Nigeria, has condemned the role of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS in the political crisis in Niger saying that the body has allowed itself to focus on regime protection over and above the interest of the common man.

Reacting to the threat of military force and other sanctions against the new regime in Niger, Rafsanjani who is also the executive director of the Civil Society Legislative and Advocacy Centre, CISLAC lamented that ECOWAS has turned itself into a pretentious advocate of democracy whereas its leadership and components have failed to uphold the principles of democracy in their respective countries.

Rafsanjani who spoke in an AIT Kakaaki programme on Monday, August 14, 2023 also lamented that the regional body had turned itself into a minion of the West.

“ECOWAS was not established to propagate democracy, Ecowas if you look at the protocol was made for free trade but it has now been blocked with the blockade of Niger,” Rafsanjani said in an interview on AIT’s Kakaaki’s programme on Monday, August 14, 2023.

“ECOWAS should remember to focus on the common man, not about regime protection, not about the head of state,” Awal Musa said.

According to him the ongoing ECOWAS action against Niger is damaging a relationship that has been there over hundreds of years.

In a direct warning to President Bola Tinubu, he said that Nigeria was turning itself into a regional bully who will in no time lose itself as an authentic and independent voice by going against the interests of the common people in Niger.

“Nigeria will be seen as an agent of the west and a threat which did not come to their aid when they were in real trouble”

Noting the silence of the Western nations advocating regime protection, he asked why the countries kept quiet in the face of the mayhem foisted by Boko Haram and other terrorist groups in Nigeria and West Africa.
