Former governor of Rivers State and a Minister-designate, Nyesom Wike fueled defection talks from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP on Tuesday when he visited the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje in Abuja on Tuesday.

GWG.ng reports that Wike was one of the backbones of the PDP prior to the 2023 General Election but turned against the party during the last presidential election mustering efforts to ensure the party’s first ever defeat in a presidential election in Rivers State last February.

Despite his animosity towards the national leadership he, however, consistently repudiated talks of his defection to the APC, the party he reportedly supported in the presidential polls.

It would be recalled that during a thanksgiving service organised in his honour shortly after he handed over power in Rivers, Governor Simi Fubara asked Wike not to abandon him if he ends up in the ruling party.

“While we are seeing sign that it’s like you want to go over to the other side with everybody wishing that, please don’t be too far from me because I know that the sharks, the tigers are really around looking for what to hurt. So, being around would continue to guide and put my head straight for the purpose of this state,” Fubara had said.

Talk of defection to the APC, however, gained traction when Wike was nominated as a minister by President Bola Tinubu last July.

Details of the meeting between Wike and Ganduje have not been made available.
