Nigerians Miffed As US Piles Pressure On Tinubu Over Niger

Nigerians were on Tuesday morning reacting with mixed feelings after the United States Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken showered praises on President Bola Tinubu over his stance against the coup in the country’s northern neighbour, Niger Republic.

GWG.ng reports that Tinubu has taken the lead in the subregion in mobilising against the coup in Niger albeit with strong reservations in Nigeria with the Senate rejecting his bid to go to war over the issue.

Besides the Senate, several stakeholders and communities in Northern Nigeria have also risen against any hard stance towards Niger.

Amid the strong emotions against Nigerian action towards Niger, Secretary Blinken revealed that he made a call to President Tinubu during which he strongly endorsed the Nigerian hard stance on the coup in Niger asking him to sustain the pressure.

Blinken said:

Spoke to Nigerian President Tinubu to commend his leadership of the Economic Community of West African States and discussed shared efforts to restore constitutional order in Niger.

The call was against the claim that the United States has a strong military base in Niger from which it monitors and obtains uranium that is found in the Nigerian neighbour to the north.
