Mutters Of Betrayal In Edo As Anenih’s Political Godson Dumps PDP
Former minister of works Arc Mike Onolememen widely regarded as one of the political godsons of the late Chief Tony Anenih has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP triggering a backlash from the party’s grassroots of betrayal.
GWG.ng reports that Onolememen gave notice of his resignation in a letter dated September 25, 2023 to Mr. Michael Eromosele, Ward 4 Chairman, PDP, Esan North East LGA, Edo State.
In the letter he said:
RESIGNATION LETTER
I am writing to formally inform you and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) that I’m resigning my membership of the party with immediate effect.
After carefully analyzing the protracted conflict in the party and consulting with relevant stakeholders from my immediate constituency, political allies, friends and family, this decision was made.
I’d like to use this medium to express my gratitude to everyone who has supported me since I joined the party in 1998.
Please accept the assurances of my highest regards.
Yours sincerely.
However, the move has triggered assertions of betrayal on the part of the former PDP chief who had been designated as the Senatorial candidate of the party for Edo Central before the Supreme Court judgment that led to the emergence of candidates supported by Governor Godwin Obaseki.
GWG.ng reports that Onolememen is one of the major governorship hopefuls in Edo State and his defection is being linked to the inclination of Governor Obaseki to support a Lagos based lawyer Asue Ighodalo as his successor on the platform of the PDP. It is now believed that he could be headed to the All Progressives Congress, APC where he is expected to battle for influence.
Meanwhile, PDP orgnaisers are blaming Onolememen as one of the party chiefs who negotiated for Obaseki to take the PDP 2020 ticket saying that he has been devoured and dumped by the man he helped to nurture.
PDP operatives in Edo say that the emergence of Obaseki as governor and leader of the party and the recent crisis in the party led to the party’s worst performance in presidential and National Assembly elections since 1999.
One party operative in a message that has gained traction in Edo political circles said in a comment after Onolememen made his decision to dump the PDP said:
“Let me put it to you sir, that posterity will judge all of us accordingly. I advice that you don’t go to another political party because you won’t excel there, the reason is simple, because you are among those who planted this seed of discord, and that of your cohorts brought us here, sir.
“We should have stick to our IHAMA in 2020 and by now we will be thinking of another term or handing over to an Esan man.”
