Tension In Kano As Gov Yusuf’s Supporters Turn Prayers To Street Protest
Supporters of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, clashed with policemen in Kano metropolis on Wednesday after the governor’s supporters turned their prayers for a positive arbitration of the ongoing election petition case into street protest.
GWG.ng reports that the protest occurred in the Dan Agundi area of the state capital.
The supporters had gathered for a special prayer concerning the political situation in the state and in solidarity with Governor Yusuf.
The clash followed the Court of Appeal’s affirmation of the Kano State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal’s judgment that declared Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna of the APC as the rightful winner of the March 18 governorship election, replacing Governor Yusuf of the NNPP.
The situation turned into a protest after mutterings swelled over following disclosures that the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the Appeal Court judgment contradicted the final pronouncement that the APC won the election.
Kano State police authorities, in response to the protest by supporters of Governor Yusuf vowed to crack down on any group demonstrating in the state following the governorship seat verdict.
Kano State police authorities, in response to the protests, vowed to crack down on any group demonstrating in the state following the governorship seat verdict.
In March 2023, INEC declared Yusuf of the NNPP as the election winner, but the state governorship election petitions tribunal overturned this decision in September, ruling him unqualified. The Court of Appeal later affirmed this decision, declaring Nasiru Gawuna of the APC as the winner, causing tension in the North-West state.
