The Ondo State chapter of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has raised concerns about the alleged mismanagement of the state’s finances during the prolonged absence of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

Fatai Adams, the state chairman of the PDP, expressed deep concern about the impact of the governor’s health challenges on the state’s affairs. He stated, “there is no clear leader of government business; the Governor remains on his sick bed; the Deputy Governor is still battling for his political survival… and our state continues to wander in darkness.”

Adams emphasized the alleged pilfering of resources belonging to Ondo State, saying, “our finances are suffering as the hard-earned resources of the state are being pilfered by interest groups within and outside government; this is to the detriment of our development and wellbeing.”

The Ondo PDP demanded transparency in financial matters, calling for a balance sheet on the state’s finances. Adams highlighted the issue of a N7 billion palliative fund, expressing concern and seeking answers to its administration.

The chairman urged Governor Akeredolu, who is currently unwell, to transfer power to the Deputy Governor in the interest of the state. He warned that history would not view kindly the governor’s “mean and shortsighted attitude.”

Besides the finances of the Ondo State government, the PDP also raised issues with the swearing-in of the council caretaker committee despite a court stoppage. Adams stated that the party would approach the court to hold those responsible for the alleged illegalities in contempt.

In response, a government official dismissed the PDP’s claims as political, asserting that government finances are secure with checks and balances in place. He challenged the opposition party to provide evidence of the alleged pilfering of state finances.
