Rivers State Crisis

The political crisis in Rivers State triggered by the defection of 27 members of the House of Assembly from the PDP to the APC deepened on Wednesday as one of the defectors allegedly made a return to the PDP even as a faction of the APC disowned the defectors.

GWG.ng reports that the Rivers State crisis took a twist with reports that two of the lawmakers, Tonye Adoki, Port Harcourt Constituency II and Linda Stalwart, Okirika State Constituency had returned to the party.

However, the claim as concerning Adoki was quickly rebuffed by the now suspended lawmaker who dismissed the claims of his return to the PDP.

Taking to his social media pages, he said:

“It has come to my knowledge that some jobless and misguided youths are being used to spread fake News that I, Hon. Tonye Adoki have reneged from my defection move. It is on record that I was among the Lawmakers that advocated for this defection to the All Progressives Congress, APC, and I owe no one any apology.

“And I am still a Member of APC.  I am also using this medium to warn anyone carrying such news in his or her platform to be ready to defend it when the time comes. I am not the kind of politician you toy with.”

However, the position of Ms Stalwart in the Rivers State political crisis remained in suspense as she has remained mum.

GWG.ng reports that the lawmaker is believed to be abroad.

Meanwhile, a faction of the APC originally loyal to the penultimate governor of the state, Rotimi Amaechi formally disowned the defecting lawmakers.

The chairman of the dissolved Rivers State Working Committee of the APC, Chief Emeka Beke in his formal response to the political crisis disowned the defectors from the PDP saying that they are unwelcome.

GWG.ng reports that Beke is contesting the dissolution of the exco in court.

Noting that the lawmakers entered the party by crook, he said that they were supposed to enter through their wards and not by announcement in the media.

He said: “As the chairman of the All Progressives Congress, duly elected, I am not aware that anybody has defected to our party. They know that APC has a process we accept defectors. They will have to go to the ward level to indicate their interest, before they can come to the centre.

“Politics is grassroots based, so they must indicate their interest at the local level. We will not accept them. These are the same set of people that worked to destroy our party. They are the people who attacked former President Muhammadu Buhari, and President Ahmed Tinubu and other leaders of APC when they visited Rivers State during the formative stage and now they want to come over here, we will not accept them. But if their interest is for good we will accept them.

“If Wike has characters, he cannot imagine coming to the APC. He does not have character. This is the same party he said is cancer,” the factional chairman said in his reaction to the crisis in Rivers State.
