Video: NSCDC’s ‘Oga At The Top’ Speaks On The Mental Agonies That Followed TV Blunder
Shem Obafiaye, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer who gained negative fame for the viral “Oga At The Top” remark in 2014, has recently opened up about the psychological impact the interview had on him.
At the time, Obafiaye, then the Lagos Commandant of the NSCDC, became a national sensation after struggling to provide the agency’s website during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily mouthing that it was with the ‘oga at the top.’
In a recent revelation, Obafiaye disclosed that the aftermath of the interview affected him psychologically. Reflecting on the incident, he shared that he had never experienced such a situation in his life. Despite the humorous memes, catchy tunes, and widespread use of “Oga At The Top” on T-shirts, Obafiaye admitted to the personal challenges he faced.
Acknowledging the impact on his mental well-being, he stated, “Definitely, it has to because I had never gone through such in my life.” He recounted the supportive words of his cousin, who prepared him for both national recognition and the accompanying embarrassment, harassment, and insults.
Following the viral moment, Obafiaye revealed that he was given a one-month rest by his commandant general before being redeployed to the Oyo State Command. He also discussed the impact on his family, noting that his son often faced teasing from classmates who referred to him as ‘Oga at the Top.’
