Christmas Bonus for Rivers teachers

Primary and secondary school teachers employed by the Rivers State Government took to the streets on Friday in a protest over their exclusion from the N100,000 Christmas Bonus awarded civil servants by Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

GWG.ng reports that the teachers mounted a siege to the Government House, Port-Harcourt, Rivers State over thier exclusion from the Christmas bonus that drew applause from a large section of the working class in the state.

Expressing their disappointment, the teachers lamented that while other civil servants in the state received their bonuses along with their December 2023 salaries, they were left wondering why they didn’t enjoy the same benefit.

Governor Fubara’s approval of the bonus for all civil servants before the Yuletide season had initially brought jubilation among the workers and garnered support from both the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the state.

Besieging the Government House, the aggrieved teachers voiced their displeasure, urging the state government to intervene. Speaking to journalists, a teacher identified as Oke shared their frustration, saying, “We were so happy when we heard that the governor approved a N100,000 Christmas bonus for all civil servants. So we assumed that the last Christmas was going to be very great for us.”

As schools prepared to resume, the teachers, having returned from their travels, found themselves facing financial strain, leading them to seek resolution. They emphasized the significance of the bonus in alleviating the hardship, especially in the challenging month of January.

Some teachers accused their banks and the State Universal Basic Education Board of neglecting the matter. Despite the frustration, the protesting Rivers State teachers maintained a peaceful disposition during the Christmas Bonus demonstration. An official from the government addressed them, commending their peaceful protest and assuring them that their concerns would be thoroughly investigated and addressed.
