The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is gearing up for its inaugural Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting under the guidance of its new Governor, Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, with the scheduled dates being February 26 and 27. In preparation, the bank recently conducted a two-day strategic session exclusively for MPC members.

The bank’s Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Mrs. Hakama Sidi Ali, affirmed the strategic session’s purpose, highlighting its goal to foster brainstorming and thorough discussions about the committee’s objectives. The key focus areas during the retreat included devising a strategic plan to enhance improvements in the monetary policy transmission mechanism.

Mrs. Ali shared that the sessions were facilitated by former MPC members, experts in monetary policy communication from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and Directors of Departments crucial to the MPC process. She emphasized that the insights gained from these discussions are expected to significantly contribute to the effectiveness and robustness of the upcoming MPC meetings.

Simultaneously, the CBN unveiled a calendar for the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meetings in 2024, revealing scheduled gatherings in February, March, May, July, September, and November. This publication on the CBN website outlines the timeline for these crucial meetings, indicating a strategic approach to policy discussions and decisions throughout the year.

The anticipation is high as the CBN, under the leadership of Governor Olayemi Cardoso, ushers in a new era for monetary policy. The commitment to engaging in thoughtful discussions, seeking insights from experts, and planning for strategic improvements underscores the importance attached to steering Nigeria’s economic course in the most effective and informed manner. As the MPC meeting approaches, all eyes are on the outcomes that will shape the monetary policy landscape in the months ahead.
