FAAN to Lagos

In a significant development, the Federal Government has ordered the relocation of the headquarters of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) from its new home at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja to Lagos.

This marks a substantial shift for FAAN, an agency recently rooted in Abuja and responsible for managing airport operations and services across the nation, including oversight of 26 airports, five of which are international.

Mr. Kabir Yusuf Mohammed, serving as the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, leads FAAN.

Under his leadership, the agency encompasses various directorates and departments, ranging from ICT and Planning to Procurement, Corporate Affairs, Safety, and Commercial & Business Development, among others. FAAN has played a pivotal role in shaping and managing Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure throughout its rich history.

Despite the relocation announcement, FAAN’s headquarters address officially remains listed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, as of January 18th, 2024. The absence of an official change signals that any potential relocation process would involve meticulous planning and logistical efforts to facilitate a seamless transition of operations from Abuja to Lagos.

As the government proceeds with this significant move, the impact on the efficiency and functionality of Nigeria’s aviation sector becomes a focal point of interest for industry experts and the general public alike. Alhaji Abubakar Bibi, a former general manager of FAAN, and other stakeholders have previously shared their perspectives on the potential implications of such relocations on aviation agencies.

The history of aviation in Nigeria is deeply intertwined with FAAN’s contributions, with the oldest airport, Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, inaugurated in 1936. This relocation decision adds a new chapter to the agency’s narrative, sparking discussions on the future dynamics of Nigeria’s aviation landscape. The coming months will likely witness close scrutiny from various quarters as the government navigates the complexities of this shift in FAAN’s operational base.
