A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Hon Silas Tafi-Warwar, has strongly criticized plans by the All Progressives Congress, APC federal administration to incorporate touts, popularly known as Agberoes in the process of tax collection.

Tafi-Warwar, who is an aspirant for the Office of the PDP National Youth Leader in a statement made available to GWG.ng averred that the strategy of employing agberoes to mobilise taxes is detrimental to the well being of the nation.

Tafi-Warwar spoke following the recent revelation by the Chairman of the Presidential Tax and Fiscal Policy Reform Committee, Taiwo Oyedele to train area boys or agberoes for tax collection.

“This move is not only ill-advised but also detrimental to the progress and development of our great nation. The Nigerian economy has been grappling with high unemployment rates for since the inception of this APC led Government, leaving many graduates without viable employment opportunities. It will be disheartening to witness the Government’s decision in the affirmative to involve motor park touts in tax collection, a role that could easily be filled by the large pool of educated Nigerian youths who are eager to contribute to the nation’s development.

“The decision to involve motor park touts in tax collection is a questionable strategy that undermines the principles of good governance and accountability. These individuals, commonly known as Agberos, have no formal training or expertise in tax administration. Their involvement in such a critical task raises serious doubts about the ability of the government to effectively and efficiently manage tax revenues.

“While we recognize the need to explore innovative ways to enhance revenue generation, it is evident that the proposed plan is a step in the wrong direction. Engaging Agberos in tax collection not only compromises the integrity of the process but also poses a significant risk of corruption and extortion. It is our duty as responsible citizens to ensure that our tax system remains fair, transparent, and free from any form of exploitation.

“Furthermore, we strongly condemn any attempt to suppress the voice of the people. The threat of a massive protest by the leading PDP candidate for the office of the PDP National Youth Leader is a clear indication of the widespread dissatisfaction with this plan. The government must take this warning seriously and reconsider its decision.

“We call upon the APC-led government to prioritize the welfare and aspirations of the Nigerian people which is filled with a variety of pool of graduates in both relevant and other related discipline. It is imperative that they engage in constructive dialogue with relevant stakeholders, including tax experts and professionals, to develop effective and sustainable strategies for revenue generation.”

Concluding, Tafi-Warwar said he and the entire Youths stand united against any policy that undermines the progress and development of Nigeria as to him is symbolised by using agberoes for tax collection.
