Former President Muhammadu Buhari has shed light on the controversy surrounding his West African School Certificate (WASC) during the 2015 general elections, clarifying his reasons for not releasing it at the time. According to details in Femi Adesina’s book, “Working with Buhari – Reflections of Special Adviser, Media & Publicity (2015–2023),” Buhari explained that he kept his certificate in a drawer and refrained from releasing it, allowing critics to “vent spleen on it.”

In the book, Adesina narrates how in November 2018, officials from the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) presented Buhari with an attestation certificate. Buhari, in 2018, was quoted as saying, “I always had it but refused to release it, so that those venting spleen on it could please themselves.”

Buhari emphasized the importance of English, Mathematics, and General Knowledge exams during military training, given the colonial heritage of English as the language for general instruction. He highlighted the practical training in mathematics and geography essential for military officers, including learning navigation in the bush using only a compass.

Quoting Buhari from the book, Adesina mentioned, “It would have been impossible for me to attend the Defence Services Staff College, India (1973) and thereafter, the United States Army War College, as a Nigerian military officer if I didn’t sit for the WASC examinations in 1961.” Buhari reflected on the military examination process, stating that candidates were examined in three subjects: English, Mathematics, and General Knowledge, aligning with the language of general instruction and the colonial legacy.

Buhari emphasized the necessity of mathematics in military training and practical applications like navigating in the bush. He shed light on the challenges military officers faced, having to find their way using only a compass and applying mathematical concepts like the Pythagoras Theorem. The former president’s insights provide context to his educational background and the considerations involved in his military training.
