Impeachment in Edo

The Chairman of Owan West Local Government Council in Edo State, Hon Dickson Ahonsi, spoke passionately about the recent impeachment of the leader of the legislative arm, Hon Joy Ohonyon, describing the actions that led to it as selfish, oppressive, and illegal. In a heartfelt expression, Ahonsi shared that ongoing dialogues are in progress to address the crisis that has unfolded.

Ahonsi shed light on the core issue, asserting that the crisis arose from Ohonyon’s refusal to meet their frequent demands for ‘welfare,’ especially when there hasn’t been substantial legislative activity. He lamented that the councillors have not moved a single motion since their tenure began, making their demands for financial perks particularly challenging to justify.

Addressing the allegations of threats to life, Ahonsi dismissed them as baseless lies. In a relatable tone, he suggested that some councillors, burdened by heavy debts, might be seeking opportunities to access the council’s funds through unconventional means. Ahonsi humanized the situation by highlighting the financial struggles of some councillors, giving context to their actions.

The chairman responded to the allegations against him, emphasizing the frivolous nature of claims such as improper dressing and leaking official information. He pointed out the personal bias against Ohonyon due to her gender, expressing that their resistance to female leadership was a driving factor behind the allegations. Ahonsi shared his commitment to maintaining discipline within the council, ensuring that no one is intimidated.

In a poignant moment, Ahonsi addressed the contentious issue of welfare demands, emphasizing that he would not compromise his principles to satisfy such requests. He highlighted the zoning of the legislative head position to Uzebba and the unique qualifications that led to Ohonyon’s appointment, showcasing the complexities surrounding the issue.

Expressing concern for the potential impact on party structure in upcoming elections, Ahonsi appealed for a peaceful resolution to safeguard the unity of the party. In doing so, he humanized the political challenges faced, underlining the need for harmony to protect the interests of the party and the local community.
