Wike’s Camp Mum, As Fubara’s Supporters Celebrate Judgment (Videos)
By Emily Ogah
Celebration was breaking out in some parts of Rivers State after the Supreme Court on Thursday confirmed Governor Siminalayi Fubara of the PDP as the duly elected Governor and dismissed suits filed by Arc. Tonye Cole of APC challenging the victory of Fubara.
Cole had challenged Governor Fubara’s victory on the ground that he wasn’t qualified to run for governor as he was still in the employ of the Rivers State government as Accountant General as at the time of the election.
Fubara of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was declared winner of the governorship election after he scored 302,614 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Cole, who polled 95,274 votes.
Both the Tribunal and Appeal Court had in concurrent judgments dismissed Mr Cole’s case for lacking merit, for failing to provide credible evidence to prove his case of non-qualification, corrupt practices and non-compliance, thus affirming Fubara’s electoral victory.
The Supreme Court, also in its judgment on Thursday upheld the decision of the Appellate Court on grounds that the APC governorship candidate failed to prove his allegations of over-voting and non-compliance leveled against the Rivers State governor.
Meanwhile, the camp of the erstwhile governor of the State, Nyesom Wike which had fallen out with the governor that was produced by him was yet to react to the development.
GWG.ng had earlier reported that the outcome of the Supreme Court judgment was not one very palatable given that the option for the camp could have been Cole, an offspring from the camp of Wike’s eternal political foe, Rotimi Amaechi. It is as such not shocking that the Wike camp will not be bursting out in celebration over the court victory won by Fubara.
