In a shocking incident on Friday, an unidentified commercial driver of a mini bus locally known as ‘tuke-tuke’ operating in Benin, Edo State, allegedly stripped naked and set a traffic official ablaze after he was apprehended for committing a traffic offence.

The driver, operating a bus marked Osun FFE145XA, reportedly ran a red light at Adesuwa Junction along Sapele Road. When approached by a traffic official, he vehemently resisted arrest.

Subsequently, another EDSTMA personnel was dispatched to escort the vehicle to the agency’s office. However, the situation escalated dramatically as the driver stripped naked, grabbed a keg of petrol from his vehicle, doused the EDSTMA official, and set him ablaze in a horrifying act of protest.

While attempts to reach EDSTMA’s spokesperson, Roland Owolabi, were unsuccessful, a circulating video on social media, featuring images of the vehicle, vividly captured the distressing incident.

In the video, a witness recounted the sequence of events, emphasizing the driver’s refusal to comply with authorities and his violent resistance. The injured EDSTMA official is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Benin City, while the perpetrator remains at large.

The authorities have issued a plea to the public, urging anyone with information regarding the driver’s whereabouts or the bus’s owner to come forward. Information can be relayed to the EDSTMA office or reported to the nearest police station.

This harrowing incident underscores the dangers faced by traffic enforcement personnel and highlights the urgent need for enhanced safety measures to protect those who diligently serve to maintain order on the roads.
