Tragedy struck in Isanlu, Yagba East Local Government Area of Kogi State, as two individuals lost their lives and two others were hospitalized after consuming self-made herbal drink in an experiment gone wrong.

The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, February 6, when four individuals decided to experiment by combining various fruits and roots to create a herbal concoction.

Remarkably, the herbal drink consumed by the Kogi-based individuals consisted of a mixture, consisting of Gegemu and Roots, was intended to induce a sense of intoxication among the youths in the community.

The experiment, however, took a deadly turn, resulting in the death of a 62-year-old man, Abiodun Luke known as Okiribo, and a 45-year-old, Samuel Jacob, popularly known as Samuel Omo-Folorunsho. Additionally, two others, Shola Pempe and another youth, were rushed to ECWA Hospital in Makutu for urgent medical attention.

The traditional ruler of Isanlu, Oba Moses Etombi, Agbana of Isanlu, expressed shock and sorrow over the incident, describing it as “tragic” and “very unfortunate.” He lamented that the herbs, traditionally used for the treatment of ailments like piles, had inadvertently led to the untimely demise of community members.t

The victims consumed more than two liters of the concoction, resulting in severe health complications. The incident has plunged the community into mourning, prompting reflection on the dangers of experimenting with herbal concoctions without proper knowledge or supervision.

SP Williams Ovye-Aya, the Public Relations Officer of the Kogi Police Command, confirmed the incident and urged youths to exercise caution and avoid the consumption of illicit herbal drink of any kind.
