Petrol Subsidy

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has raised concerns over the silence of President Bola Tinubu on the return of petrol subsidy accusing the administration of less than noble intentions in not being transparent over the issue.

Speaking through his Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku contends that the absence of a response from the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government suggests that public funds are being diverted into private pockets. He made these assertions while reacting to reports by the IMF indicating that the Nigerian government had resumed paying petrol subsidy.

Media reports stated that monthly subsidy payment now amounts to nearly N1 trillion, surpassing the previous monthly payments under the President Muhammadu Buhari administration. In response to the controversy, Shaibu expressed his dismay, stating that it has become evident that monies are being diverted under an opaque and secret subsidy regime within the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC).

He criticized the lack of transparency surrounding the subsidy issue and condemned the government’s failure to address it openly, alleging that funds are being diverted into private hands. Shaibu expressed disappointment in Finance Minister Wale Edun and CBN Governor Yemi Cardoso for not speaking up on the matter.

Furthermore, Shaibu highlighted the alleged obstruction of the Dangote refinery’s operations by the Tinubu government. He cited regulatory delays and importation challenges hindering the refinery’s plan to release aviation fuel and diesel for sale in the Nigerian market. Shaibu criticized Tinubu’s economic team, accusing them of prioritizing personal interests over national welfare and warning of deteriorating economic conditions under their leadership.

The revelations made by Shaibu underscore growing concerns about transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s economic policies. With allegations of corruption and mismanagement surfacing, there is a pressing need for greater scrutiny and oversight to ensure that public funds are used responsibly and for the benefit of all Nigerians.
