Building in Lagos Island

A tragic incident unfolded on Thursday as a three-storey building under construction collapsed at No. 1 Isalegangan Street by Itafaji Market, Lagos Island area of Lagos. Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), disclosed that the collapse occurred around 10:15 am.

According to Oke-Osanyintolu, LASEMA swiftly responded to the scene and conducted a comprehensive assessment. Shockingly, it was determined that the structure collapsed on its own without any external influence.

The Permanent Secretary highlighted a critical concern regarding the narrow access street, emphasizing that it poses challenges for heavy-duty vehicular operations. In light of this, he recommended that the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) oversee the manual demolition of the remaining pillars.

Oke-Osanyintolu stressed the importance of coordinating the manual site clearance, which would be spearheaded by LASEMA Lekki branch. This coordinated effort aims to clear the road of debris resulting from the construction work preceding the collapse.

In an effort to ensure public safety, Oke-Osanyintolu urged members of the public to steer clear of the incident scene. The gravity of the situation underscores the need for vigilant safety measures and proactive intervention to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
