Qatar on Tinubu's visit

Qatar has confirmed its willingness to host the business and investment forum proposed by Nigeria during President Bola Tinubu’s visit to the Arab nation on March 2, 2024.

A leaked memo that circulated on February 24, 2024, had indicated Qatar’s refusal of the proposed forum, citing the unavailability of Mohammed Bin Hamad Al-Thani, the country’s minister of commerce and industry. Moreover, the Qatar embassy in Abuja denied any existing agreement between Qatar and Nigeria regarding investment promotion.

However, in a recent memo dated Sunday, February 25, 2024, addressed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Qatar confirmed the business parley during Tinubu’s visit. The embassy stated, “The Qatar Chamber of Commerce will host the above-mentioned event on March 3, 2024, as proposed by the Nigerian side,” signifying a change in stance.

This development marks a turnaround from Qatar’s initial position, where the unavailability of a key official was cited as the reason for declining the proposed investment forum. The confirmation of the business and investment forum aligns with Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen economic ties and foster investment opportunities with Qatar.

President Tinubu’s upcoming State visit to Qatar from March 2nd to 3rd, 2024, underscores the significance of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Qatar. The hosting of the business and investment forum during Tinubu’s visit highlights the mutual interest of both nations in exploring avenues for economic cooperation and collaboration.

Qatar’s willingness to host the business parley demonstrates a positive shift in bilateral relations between the two countries. The forum presents a valuable opportunity for Nigerian and Qatari businesses to engage in discussions, explore partnerships, and promote investment opportunities across various sectors.

As Qatar prepares to host the business and investment forum, anticipation grows for fruitful deliberations and meaningful outcomes that will contribute to the enhancement of economic cooperation between Nigeria and Qatar. The event serves as a platform for fostering stronger ties and advancing shared objectives in economic development and prosperity.
