A dramatic prison escape in Ghana has landed two prison officers in hot water. Joseph Oteng and Sergeant Isaac Boateng Bonsu stand accused of conspiracy and aiding the escape of a Chinese convict, Wang Xiao, from Nsawam Medium Prison.

The case has drawn attention to the importance of security cameras (CCTV) in exposing criminal activity. The officers were tasked with escorting Wang Xiao for medical treatment, but they allegedly strayed from protocol.

After a visit to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, the promise of meeting Wang Xiao’s wife lured them to a hotel in Korle Gonno. There, the situation took a surprising turn. The officers, after removing Wang Xiao’s handcuffs, allowed him a private meeting with his wife in a hotel room.

In exchange for this breach of security, they were offered seemingly harmless KFC meals – a stark contrast to the seriousness of their actions. While the officers enjoyed their food in the reception area, Wang Xiao and his wife made their escape. They vanished from the first floor by jumping from the balcony, leaving no trace except for incriminating CCTV footage.

The video evidence, reviewed by investigators, revealed the planned escape and the officers’ role in enabling it. In an attempt to cover their tracks, Oteng and Bonsu fabricated a story about a car kidnapping the convict. However, the hotel’s CCTV footage exposed the lie and their involvement in the escape.

Facing the consequences, both officers pleaded not guilty when presented before the Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Mrs. Afia Owusua Appiah. Despite their plea, they were granted bail of GhC100,000 each under strict conditions.
