The Nigerian Federal Government, through its Ministry of Transport, has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Messrs MPH Rail Development Limited, a UK-based company to fastrack rail travel and connectivity on the Port Harcourt–Enugu–Calabar–Abuja Standard Gauge Rail Line project.

Under this public-private partnership framework, the ambitious project seeks to enhance the design, construction, commissioning, operation, and eventual transfer of a cutting-edge standard gauge rail line. This rail line is poised to link major cities across Nigeria, facilitating smoother movement of people and goods, stimulating economic activities, and significantly contributing to the nation’s socio-economic growth.

The MoU signing ceremony symbolized not just a formality but also showcased the collaborative efforts between the Nigerian government and international partners towards achieving infrastructural excellence. Dignitaries including the Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Alkali, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Olufemi Oloruntola, and key directors from the ministry, graced the historic occasion, alongside their counterparts from MPH Rail Development Limited, affirming mutual commitment to the project’s success.

As per the MoU terms, MPH Rail Development Limited will oversee the entire lifecycle of the rail line project, from initial design to operational management and eventual transfer upon completion. This comprehensive approach ensures alignment with international best practices and standards, promising a world-class rail system for Nigeria.

The project’s viability received a boost with the approval of the Outline Business Case and the issuance of a compliance certificate by the Infrastructure, Concession, and Regulatory Commission. These approvals validate the project’s feasibility and regulatory compliance, paving the way for further documentation and eventual approval by the Federal Executive Council.

The project aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, aiming to bolster ongoing railway modernization projects across Nigeria. Progression of the project necessitates the compilation of essential documents including feasibility studies, business case studies, environmental and social impact assessments, resettlement action plans, and financial models, ensuring seamless implementation and sustainability without burdening the government with loans or debts.
