The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of Nigeria, led by Chairman Ola Olukoyede, has unveiled a fresh approach to tackling internet fraudsters, commonly known as ‘Yahoo Boys’ through their rehabilitation.

This innovative initiative was revealed during a visit from the National Association of University Students, headed by President Obadi Marshal.

The EFCC’s new program aims to rehabilitate convicted cybercriminals by reshaping their mindset and channeling their abilities towards positive contributions to society.

The primary objective is to dissuade young people from turning to cybercrime by offering them constructive alternatives.

Chairman Olukoyede stressed the significance of rehabilitation in deterring youth from internet crimes, emphasizing the lasting consequences of being labeled an ‘ex-convict’.

He highlighted how such a stigma could severely limit future opportunities and influence how society perceives them.

The initiative intends to collaborate with correctional facilities to ensure that the rehabilitation process effectively reintegrates convicts as productive members of society.

However, the EFCC proposal for the rehabilitation of the Yahoo boys has sparked various reactions from the public. Some see it as a commendable effort to address the underlying causes of cybercrime among Nigerian youth, potentially harnessing their skills for the betterment of society.
