Fed Cup: Remo Stars, Sporting Lagos, Heartland Suffer Shock Exits
Three Nigeria Premier League Football teams, Remo Stars, Sporting Lagos, and Heartland FC Owerri, have been eliminated in their respective Football Association (FA) Cup competitions in their different states.
In a surprising turn of events, Nigerian National League side, Beyond Limit, exceeded expectations by defeating senior side Remo Stars 5-4 on penalties after regulation time ended in a 1-1 draw. Beyond Limit will now advance to the Ogun State FA Cup final, where they are set to face Stormers SC, a team they previously defeated 5-0 in the Nigerian National League earlier this season.
In Lagos, NPFL debutants Sporting Lagos suffered a 2-0 loss to Inter Lagos in their FA Cup encounter. Inter Lagos will proceed to the finals to face Ikorodu FC at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan on Sunday. Meanwhile, Ikorodu City secured their spot in the final by defeating First Bank 3-0.
Elsewhere, relegation-threatened Heartland FC were eliminated from the Imo State FA Cup after losing 3-2 on penalties to third-division side Ikukuoma FC.
In Niger State, Tornadoes advanced to the final of the 2024 Niger State FA Cup after defeating Maikunkele United in the semi-final. In another semi-final clash, Bendel Insurance secured a 2-1 victory over Metrice FC, setting up a final showdown against Ine Stars at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Edo.
At the Pantami Stadium, Gombe United is scheduled to meet Doma United in the FA Cup Final on Saturday. Gombe United had previously emerged victorious against Doma United in a penalty shootout last year.
In Benue, NationWide League One side, Flight FC of Gboko, will face a tough challenge when they take on NPFL giants Lobi Stars in the final slated for Saturday at the JS Tarka Stadium in Gboko. Despite being labeled as underdogs, Flight FC Chairman Solomon Andiir remains optimistic about their chances.
“We are going to give our big brothers a good fight in the final. It will be an interesting duel because even as Lobi Stars are the favorite, we are ready to cause a major upset,” said Andiir, who also serves as a football coach.
Meanwhile, Enyimba’s fixture against Miracle FC of Umunneochi in the semi-finals of the Abia FA Cup has been postponed due to exigencies on the part of the Abia State Football Association.
