Students loan private universities

The House of Representatives has announced that students attending private universities won’t qualify for the student loan scheme.

Isiaka Gboyega, Chairman of the House Committee on Tertiary Education and Student Loans, clarified the decision on Wednesday while addressing newsmen, citing the high tuition fees in private institutions.

Gboyega emphasized that the fees of one student in a private university could cover the expenses of several in public schools.

Although the recent student loan bill signed by President Bola Tinubu excludes private school students, Gboyega highlighted the eligibility criteria, stating, “An applicant must be a citizen of Nigeria and have secured admission into any government-established university, polytechnic, or college of education.”

Regarding the exclusion of private schools, Gboyega remarked, “For anyone that has the capacity to send his/her children to those private schools, the need for a loan of this scheme is minimal.” However, he expressed openness to expanding the scheme to include private school students in the future.
