Adelabu apologise

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has come under fire for remarks made during a media briefing on the recent hike in electricity tariffs.

Adelabu raised eyebrows when he suggested that inadequate payment for electricity encourages wasteful consumption habits among Nigerians. He pointed to instances where individuals leave appliances like air conditioners and freezers running for extended periods without regard for energy conservation.

Furthermore, the minister drew comparisons to practices abroad, insinuating that citizens of other countries exhibit more prudent electricity usage behaviors.

However, Adelabu’s comments did not sit well with many Nigerians, who swiftly took to social media to express their disapproval. Netizens criticized the minister’s stance, arguing that the issue lies with the inconsistent power supply and exorbitant tariffs rather than consumer behavior.

Read some netizens reactions below;

@truetalk2024: Oga minister sir. This is why every house should have a prepaid meter so that u pay according to use. And just to add. In abroad I don’t see people switching off their fridge plz. And in summer people leave their Ac on. Stop comparing Nigeria with Abroad plz I beg u guys.

@Nature_nurtured: Don’t worry, years later you will retire and start paying the electricity hike fee you proposed. And you will see how e dey sweet. You are still on government allowances and body dey sweet you 🤣😂

@Dolan_Nkem: This must be one the lazy excuses to punish everyone. If you have a prepaid meter, how does it concern government how one uses electronic/ electrical equipments. The more you leave it on the more you pay.

@Serrafik1: It is not your business. Give us u interrupted power supply and leave us to pay for what you use. By hiking the price and making it unaffordable, you cant achieve the aim of regulation, but destroying the economy and the fundamental right of the people.

@Paskael: Do we have power for 24hrs in a day?This Minister of Power doesn’t understand his job and he’s not asking for help.The policy flip flop from that Ministry is too clear for a discerning CEO to sack him.

GWG.ng reports that the backlash comes amid ongoing discontent over the recent tariff hike imposed by electricity providers in the country. Nigerians continue to voice their frustrations with the perceived lack of transparency and affordability in the energy sector.
