Femi Falana Warns Against Potential Abuse of State Police by Governors
In an interview on Channels Television, prominent human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, expressed concerns regarding the implementation of state police in Nigeria.
Femi Falana cautioned that while the idea of state police has gained traction in response to rising insecurity, there is a risk that some state governors could exploit this new system for oppressive purposes.
Femi Falana emphasized the importance of establishing clear legal safeguards to prevent state governors from using state police forces to intimidate or oppress political opponents. He stressed the need for defined jurisdictions and accountability measures to avoid conflicts between different security agencies and ensure that state police prioritize serving the people over serving political interests.
Highlighting the current decentralized nature of security in the country, Falana pointed out that many residential estates and communities already employ private security outfits armed with various weapons. He underline the importance of revisiting constitutional provisions and policy frameworks to address potential abuses and ensure that the establishment of state police enhances security without compromising civil liberties.
While acknowledging the benefits of decentralized policing in a federal system, Falana urged policymakers to carefully consider and address the risks associated with granting state governors control over police forces. He emphasized the need for transparency, accountability, and respect for human rights in any future implementation of state police to prevent the misuse of power and safeguard the rights of all citizens.
