The Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC are set to call off the nationwide strike after the two unions got a commitment from President Bola Tinubu to raise the National Minimum Wage above the N60,000 offered by the Federal Government.

GWG.ng reports that a figure has not been reached but the negotiating team is to meet round the clock for the next seven days to reach an agreement.

The agreement was signed by the Ministers of Information and Labour, Mohammed Idris and Nkeriuka Onyejiocha respectively for the government and by Joe Ajaero and Festus Osifo respectively for the NLC and the TUC.

GWG.ng reports that as part of the agreement it was resolved that no worker who partook in the strike will be punished for partaking in the strike.

GWG.ng reports that earlier in the day that the presidency through presidential aide Bayo Onanuga had accused the NLC and the TUC of forging an agenda on behalf of the Labour Party to weaken the Bola Tinubu administration.

According to a tweet he posted on his verified X handle, the former journalist and pro-democracy activist had said:

It’s saddening that Labour could go to this extreme. But it is not surprising to the perceptive minds. Labour is harming the Nigerian people they claim to be fighting for. Today, many sick Nigerians could not access medical care at government hospitals. Not even those with critical medical conditions. It appears labour is playing politics by other means. Many of the affiliates of the two central unions, NLC and TUC are members and supporters of the Labour Party. They logically bear ill-will and grudges against the Tinubu administration. What is clear is that the issue they claim to be fighting for cannot be resolved by blackmail or sabotage, they cannot even be resolved by the Federal Government unilaterally. The Labour leaders will still have to return to the negotiating table.

GWG.ng reports that the presidential aide has been attacked by Nigerians from across all parts of the country for allegedly politicising the labour agenda.
