Tinubu Ramaphosa

President Bola Tinubu has flatly rejected insinuations that he was snubbed during the inauguration of President Cyril Ramaphosa, as he released pictures of a one-on-one meeting with the South African leader on Thursday afternoon.

GWG.ng reports that the president’s response came after critics alleged that he was snubbed at the inauguration following the circulation of viral videos of Ramaphosa warmly greeting some leaders at the occasion.

Tinubu who sat in the second roll was not among those greeted leading to a storm on social media over the reported belittling of Nigeria which was at one time regarded as a frontline country in the war against apartheid.

However, presidency officials subsequently released a video that showed Ramaphosa warmly greeting Tinubu during the inauguration. That video was still not enough to satisfy many Nigerian critics.

Tinubu who had earlier been scheduled to return to Nigeria after the inauguration, however, stayed back and on Thursday had a one-on-one session with President Ramaphosa.

In a post on his X handle on Thursday afternoon affirmed the meeting which he said was expected to solidify Nigeria-South Africa relations, Tinubu said:

I had the honor of attending President Cyril Ramaphosa’s inauguration in Pretoria yesterday, and today I met with him for a bilateral meeting. Our discussions focused on strengthening cooperation and enhancing the economic ties between Nigeria and South Africa.

President Ramaphosa’s warm welcome and dedication to mutual respect and cooperation reflect the depth of our relationship. We intend working together to address our countries’ challenges through robust trade and economic strategies, and I am hopeful that we can lead our nations towards increased prosperity and unity.

Looking forward to collaborating at this crucial juncture for the progress of our continent.

Remarkably, while online supporters of the president saw the pictures as a vindication of the president which critics like Aisha Yefusu could not see, many critics were, however, not satisfied as they continued to mock.

GWG.ng gathered some of the reactions from both sides.
