Many Nigerian celebrities coming out to mourn the death of prominent television presenter, actress, fashion designer, and singer Lara Odubo are facing a backlash as the are accused of hypocrisy over what some allege is their lack of endearment towards her in her lifetime

Lara Odubo, a versatile talent in the entertainment industry, passed away on Saturday, July 28th, 2024, as reported by GWG.ng. The sad news was announced by blogger Temilola Sobola. While the exact cause of her death remains undisclosed, reports suggest that Odubo had been ill for several days prior to her passing.

Mercy Aigbe took to Instagram to express her sorrow, revealing her disbelief over the tragic news. In her heartfelt post, she bade farewell to Odubo, whom she appeared to have been close to. Joining her in mourning were her husband Kazim Adeoti, along with Nollywood figures Bimpe Akintunde, Toyin Adewale, and Fausat Balogun, who all expressed their condolences in the comments.

However, this public display of grief did not sit well with some online users. Critics pointed out that the celebrities had not shown support for Odubo during her lifetime, sparking a debate about the authenticity of their condolences.

Lara Odubo’s death adds to the list of recent celebrity losses in the Nigerian entertainment industry. Last month, veteran Nollywood actress Stella Ikwuegbu passed away on June 16th after battling leg cancer. The news was shared by movie producer Stanley Nwoko, known as Stanley Ontop, via Instagram.

A week before Ikwuegbu’s death, the Yoruba Nollywood community mourned the loss of veteran actor Dayo Adewunmi, popularly known as Sule Suebebe. He died on June 12th at an undisclosed hospital in Ibadan, Oyo State. The news was announced by Ibadan-based cleric Pastor Ademola Amusan, also known as Agbala Gabriel, who had been caring for Adewunmi during his illness.
