Australian hockey star Tom Craig has been arrested in Paris on suspicion of buying cocaine. The 28-year-old athlete was reportedly caught attempting to purchase the illegal substance from a street dealer just after midnight on Tuesday.

This happened shortly after the Australian men’s hockey team suffered a crushing 2-0 defeat to the Netherlands in the quarter-finals of the Paris Olympics.

According to French media, Craig was apprehended in the trendy 9th arrondissement of Paris.

A witness told FranceInfo, “The police arrested two men, in the middle of a transaction.” The alleged dealer, a 17-year-old minor, was found with seven vials of cocaine, 75 ecstasy tablets, and 3 grams of Mephedrone, a synthetic amphetamine. Both Craig and the dealer are currently in custody as the Paris narcotics division continues its investigation.

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) confirmed the arrest, stating, “An Australian hockey team member is in custody after being arrested in Paris on August 6th. No charges have been laid. The AOC is continuing to make enquiries and arrange support for the team member.”

Tom Craig, a veteran player with over 100 appearances for the national team, has had a distinguished career. He was part of the Australian team that won a silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and a gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Hockey Australia chief executive David Pryles had earlier praised the team’s culture, writing on X, “Incredible group of athletes and staff we have. With the right people, culture and values, you can accomplish great things. There’s only upside from here.”
